UCPN Maoist party to form joint mechanism to steer govt

kathmandu, The UCPN (Maoist) has decided to form a joint mechanism to run the Jhala Nath Khanal-led coalition government formed on Feb 3. The office bearers’ meeting held at party headquarters Perisdanda took a decision to this effect. Earlier, Prime Minister Khanal and Maoist Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal had agreed to form such a mechanism during the PM election. Dahal is expected to lead the mechanism, which aims to facilitate government functioning, in the first phase. The Maoists also decided to hold talks with the prime minister in order to give the Cabinet a complete shape. The Maoist party has decided to introduce an early budget.
The meeting also dwelt on the Gorkha District Development Committee Council meeting, where Dahal supporters had tried to stop Vice Chairman Baburam Bhattarai from being the chief guest of an inauguration programme. A furious Bhattarai in Gorkha said he was ready to embrace death if working for the country and people was considered crime. Dahal told the meeting that there was no conspiracy against Bhattarai.
The office bearers’ meeting also discussed the names of candidates to be sent to represent the party in the government but could not reach a conclusion. The Maoists are yet to select seven full ministers, state and assistant ministers for Cabinet expansion. A Standing Committee meeting scheduled for Tuesday is likely to decide the names of remaining ministers.

Meanwhile, party workers close to Bhattarai submitted a memo to the headquarters urging it to interfere to end disputes going on over the party’s trade unions.
